About Us:

A Message from the Founders

“We are humbled by the fact that literally thousands of people have overcome varied emotional upsets, difficulties, and trouble in their lives with help we’ve provided.”

“A culmination of experience and knowledge, the Whitford-Thomas Group is, more importantly, a manifestation of our devotion to the spirit and humanity of teaching others how to live their lives relatively free of emotional upset, and instead with happiness and contentment.”

Robert W. Whitford, Ed. S., LMHC
     David L. Thomas, Ph.D., LMHC
     Co-Founders - Whitford-Thomas Group, Inc.

Whitford-Thomas Group, Inc. (WTG) is a mental health and counseling practice offering help, hope, and education to those wishing to make progress in their lives. We pride ourselves in having a sensitive ear, an easy-to-understand style, and a workable approach including rational solutions to problems that occur in our everyday existence.

WTG is expertly run by Robert Whitford Ed. S., LMHC and David L. Thomas Ph.D., LMHC, well respected and noted Tampa area psychotherapists.

Robert W. Whitford, Ed.S., LMHC
Robert Whitford has been lending his skills and expertise to mental health counseling since 1973. He earned his Masters Degree in Counseling from Ball State University and Ed.S. In Counseling from the University of South Florida.

Whitford contributes a wealth of knowledge and experience in many areas to the practice. He is a clinical member of the Association for Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) and was a Charter Board member of the Florida ATSA.

He’s developed sex offender programs and provided assessment and treatment for juvenile and adult sex offenders for over 25 years in hospitals, prisons and community clinics.

He is further certified in all aspects of testing, evaluations and reporting via use of the Behavior Technology Inc. Monarch Penile Plethysmograph (PPG).

Whitford also provides specialty treatment for those with PTSD, Anger Reduction & Management, various adjustment disorders and juvenile/adolescent delinquency issues.

Bob is also an experienced and thorough expert witness for the judiciary.

David L. Thomas, Ph.D, LMHC
David Thomas received his Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of South Florida in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Counseling from USF in 1987.

He has been certified as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida since 1986 and The National Board of Certified Counselors since 1987.

Dr. Thomas has worked extensively in the area of Alcohol and Substance Abuse and Treatment, including work with various county and state agencies as well as developing treatment protocols for hospitals and clinics.

He is credited with bringing alternative substance abuse services to the Tampa Bay area. The methodology offers an option to traditional 12-step “higher power” programs.

Dr. Thomas also contributes a wealth of insight and knowledge to the Group in all facets of general mental health such as overcoming depression, stress reduction and management, handling anxiety, anger management, grief and loss, family and marital counseling, and more.

Counselors and psychotherapists at Whitford-Thomas Group practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with specific focus drawn from rational theory and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

They have obtained specific, additional education in methods of REBT and have received direct instruction from Teaching Fellows of the Albert Ellis Institute, New York, N.Y.

Albert Ellis Institute is a world center for mental health research, training, and clinical practice.

The Institute is the source of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) which is the foundation of all cognitive-behavior approaches in use around the world today.

In 1955 Dr. Albert Ellis developed REBT which is an action-oriented therapeutic approach that stimulates emotional growth by teaching people to replace their self-defeating thoughts, feelings and actions with new and more effective ones.

Today Albert Ellis Institute is a world center of research, training, and practice of REBT, headed by its founder Dr. Albert Ellis who (at age 90) remains one of the most influential psychologists of our time, and has authored more than 70 books and 700 articles, all designed to help people overcome destructive, self-defeating emotions and improve their lives.

Mr. Whitford and Dr. Thomas are both Associate Fellows and teaching faculty members of the Albert Ellis Institute.

The foremost principle of REBT, and that which we strongly adhere to at Whitford-Thomas Group, is that individuals have the ability to overcome most emotional upsets and neuroses if simply given the proper educational tools.

Simply put, it is the common human condition that we (all of us) create our own emotions via our own thinking. Happy or sad, angry, excited, down-in-the-dumps, are very real emotions and feelings, but all are created by the individual’s thinking and perceptions not by someone else’s, or outside forces.

Through the use of the principles of REBT we teach individuals that they are responsible for their own emotions and give them the power to change and overcome their unhealthy thoughts that interfere with their ability to function and enjoy life.

There is no magic to overcoming life’s problems. And if you or someone you know experiences them, you’re acutely aware of the accompanying emotional and physical consequences.

It doesn't have to be that way.
